I’ve been thinking a lot about honesty lately. Upon review, I must admit that the image that I want to portray to you never has an evil thought or intent, never acts in his own self-interest. Never does things that I don’t want you to know about.

The truth is, if I’m honest, that I have a tendency to stretch the truth, make myself look good, act in a way to make sure I get more credit for good things that happen, and less for unfortunate things. This fictitious persona of mine has a tendency to keep evil in the dark rather than bring it into the light.

Francesca Battistelli addresses this dilemma in her song “If We’re Honest.” Check out the lyrics.

Truth is harder than a lie
The dark seems safer than the light
And everyone has a heart that loves to hide
I’m a mess and so are you
We’ve built walls nobody can get through
Yeah, it may be hard, but the best thing we could ever do, ever do

[Chorus:]
Bring your brokenness, and I’ll bring mine
‘Cause love can heal what hurt divides
And mercy’s waiting on the other side
If we’re honest
If we’re honest

Don’t pretend to be something that you’re not
Living life afraid of getting caught
There is freedom found when we lay
our secrets down at the cross, at the cross

[Chorus]

It would change our lives
It would set us free
It’s what we need to be

[Chorus]

Our sin nature is a fact of life. But the hope is that with the help of the Holy Spirit, we will catch ourselves in compromise and let his love and forgiveness amaze us. After all, he found us worth redeeming even when we were ignoring his call.

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

As you splash into summer, my prayer for you is that you not get so busy with fun activities that you don’t take time to be honest with yourself, and honest with God. How liberating would it be if we could make periodic times of reflection, and subsequent confession, a part of our summer schedule?

Be honest with God. Leap into his arms. Hold nothing back. After all, a clear conscience is  sure to feel better than your best cannonball ever.

Jump on in. The water’s fine!  And have a terrific start to summer.
