We haven’t had excessive amounts of snow so far this winter, but it sure has been cold!  Many nights this month have been below zero across the state.  Makes me appreciate a working furnace!

But there are some who not only don’t have a furnace, they don’t have a home.  It’s easy to lose track of the reality that there are homeless people, struggling to find warmth, right here in eastern Iowa.  I am so thankful that there are homeless shelters that can offer that warmth during such a cold, cold month.

These shelters are all not-for-profit, which means a large portion of their funding comes through donations.  As I’ve spoken with the directors of some of these shelters, they are reporting that the need for shelter is acute.  Some have set up beds in closets and spare rooms, not wanting to turn anyone away into this brutal January weather.

They need our help.  This month, Life 101.9 has launched “Big Help for Winter Warmth”, a campaign that gives you the opportunity to provide a warm bed and a hot meal to someone in need.  On average, it takes about $15 to provide that.  If you’re willing to get involved, you can make a donation directly to the homeless shelter of your choice, through our website.  How many warm nights can you provide?

There are so many causes for homelessness…losing a job, mental illness, substance abuse, domestic violence, eviction, and the list goes on.  Many of these shelters also offer counseling to help people get on their feet again.  Your donation can go a long way toward changing someone’s life.  Click on this link and make your gift today.

As you do, remember the words of Jesus from Matthew 25:40, “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”

Thank you, God bless you, and stay warm!

Yours in Christ,
Doug Smith
