Have you ever felt abandoned? As you face a difficult time in life, you feel like no one is beside you. In that moment, even God can feel far away, and you struggle with loneliness like you’ve never felt. I know there have been times recently where I’ve felt that way, and I’ve wondered what God’s plan is for that moment?
It’s in those moments that I go to God’s word, the Bible, and see what He would say. In the Psalms, David often felt that way. In Psalm 13, David cries out to God saying,
“How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?”
It looks like David’s feeling pretty abandoned. And sometimes we can find encouragement even there. As I look at people that might serve as examples for me, or that I might put up on a pedestal, I find a person who tackles the same problems I do. He’s human.
But I also find encouragement at the end of the Psalm, as David remembers that even in the challenges he faces, God is always there. Verses 5 and 6 of Psalm 13 say,
“But I have trusted in Your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in Your salvation.
I will sing to the Lord, because He has dealt bountifully with me.”
David brings that reminder that no matter how alone you or I feel, God has never abandoned us. His love goes beyond anything we could imagine. And even though it’s not always easy, the answer to a hopeless situation may be to sit, trust in, and sing to God.
