Did you know that Thanksgiving has been celebrated as a federal holiday every year since 1863? This tradition, according to Wikipedia, began when president Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens”, to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November.
This leads me to another thought about keeping the celebration full of meaning for future generations. I wonder how many of our children and grandchildren know that Thanksgiving is a celebration of gratitude to the Lord for all he has done? If it’s been a while since you spoke up about the meaning of this wonderful holiday, maybe this could be the year!
In fact, if you regularly use Thanksgiving as an opportunity to acknowledge God’s bounty by sharing at your table before the prayer, or you perhaps, are thinking about doing so for the very first time this year, would you drop me a line to let me know how it went? I’d love to hear your story.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Something to think about.
