Revelation 2:17 says that as followers of Christ, we will be given a new name written on a white stone. A name where our past failures and shortcomings don’t define us, and a name that is eternally secure.
In her book , Lisa Bevere shares some of her personal reflections on our eternal names:
“This new name declares victories. It is etched with how we conquered our fears and became who God created us to be. I find it fascinating that our new name is written in stone. To me this says that who we have been is in flux, but who we are becoming is eternal. Why would I choose to live in the confines of a name that fits my now, when my Rock is fashioning one for me that will fit forever? I am alive to grow into the likeness of my new name.” –An excerpt from Adamant
Lisa expands on this idea of living from a name that no longer applies to who we are.
“Too often we label ourselves trying to belong and here’s the thing; this world is never going to feel like home, because it isn’t our home. There is an eternity that is drawing each and every one of us and there’s this pull on our heart. I think that everything we go through here is to grow into something there.”
She reminds us that this life is but a vapor in the wind; just a short time period when compared to eternity.
“If this life is a vapor and it’s just a mist in the wind, then I have to understand that the names other people call me, or the things that I’ve done, they’re inconsequential compared to where I am going and what I will do.”
“Jesus will always speak to my eternal name; He will not speak about what I’ve done or what I’ve been, He’s going to speak about where I am going and who He is, because as He is, so am I in Him.”
“He’s growing me into His likeness from glory to glory, from trial to trial, from hope to hope, and strength to strength…even in that midst of the worst time period of our life, God is actually calling us His own.”
What we have done in the past doesn’t define or nullify who we are in Christ. Lisa speaks to the Spirit of God that is looking out for His children and protecting us as His own.
“He’s hovering with nurturing, cherishing, and gentle motions like a dove, just waiting for us to turn to Him. That imagery of adamant intimacy and this God whose love for us is invincible. His love for us is adamant; it’s invincible. It means that we can actually trust Him that He is transforming us.”
Amidst a world of confusion and chaos, Lisa invites us to grow in the likeness of our new names and embrace our true identity in Jesus Christ.
