I’ve been guilty of it.  I wonder if you have too.  Living life just waiting for the next big thing.  It’s sort of the American way, isn’t it?  Rather than focusing on where God has us right now, we look to the greener pastures of life…that new house, the next promotion, perhaps a new car or that gadget that will make our lives complete.  When we find our hope or joy in temporary happiness, we’re sure to face a letdown.

Now don’t get me wrong.  I think looking forward to something is a normal and natural part of our lives.  God has blessed each of us with many good gifts, both big and small, and it’s great to be excited about them.  Right now I’m looking forward to the first day of the Major League Baseball season and our family’s summer vacation.  These are good things, but without something more, someone greater, the excitement of these things will fade.   I’m thankful that there is something more.  Because of our faith in Jesus Christ we have SO MUCH MORE to look forward to.  The Bible tells us about many of these things, here are just a few…

1 Peter 1:3-4 – “All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you…”

John 14:2-3 – “There is more than enough room in my Father’s home.  If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?  When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.”

Revelation 21:4 – “He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”

The fact that God has blessed us in these ways and we have so many amazing things to look forward to is pretty great on its own.  But here’s something even better…we get to share the hope we have in Jesus with the people that he puts in our path today!  While you and I may not know what each person is going through, we know that God does and he will use us to share hope that goes beyond anything we will ever see here on Earth.

So, enjoy those blessings that God has given you.  Look forward to the start of baseball season…you are looking forward to the start of baseball season, aren’t you?!?  If you start feeling distracted by the next big thing, be encouraged in knowing that you and I have so much more in store.  More for today, tomorrow and for all eternity.

In Christ,

Matt Deane
