I work a few hours each week at our local YMCA. My title is “building supervisor” but actually part of my job description doesn’t sound as glamourous as the title but it’s very important.
I wash and dry filthy rags.
That’s right. I clean and fold rags that have been used to disinfect surfaces where patrons touch the equipment with their hands.
The other day during my “dirty rag pickup”, I was reminded of my favorite rags Bible verse. I’ll bet you know it or at least know about it.
Romans 3: 10 says this: “All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.”
In this verse, the Apostle Paul reminds us that doing good deeds does not cancel out our debt to God for all of of the sin in our life. In fact trying to do good things for God for him to accept us is a total waste of time and energy. We can be the most loving, benevolent person on the planet but our lives need redemption. As it says in an earlier verse in the third chapter of Romans, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” This means that all the good things we do don’t cancel out our sin.
Only the blood of Jesus satisfies the wrath of God that we deserve and only then are our good deeds acceptable to him. In fact, once we become part of God’s “forever family”, he encourages us to live lives of service and is glorified by every act done in His name. He sees our good works in a different light. He calls them “gold, silver and precious stones.” 1 Cor. 3:12.
Think of it as God’s “rags to riches” guarantee. You give him your broken life and he guarantees that all that you do in His Name is acceptable and blessed going forward.
And you can take that promise to the bank!
